On May 1, 2006, the Maybelle Clark Macdonald Fund awarded a multi-year challenge grant to PlayWrite. What a difference the MCM Fund challenge has made! The organizational consequences were profound. Our board of directors rose to a new level, meeting the MCM challenge with great enthusiasm. In the first 12 months of the grant, individual contributions were nearly triple what they were for the prior 12 months. In that span of time, we went from having one month of operating cash to six months. The staff was energized anew, able to focus entirely on our mission, and PlayWrite served nearly 30% more youth than in the previous year. In the summer of 2007 we were able to present the creative work of PlayWrite youth at the new Gerding Theater – a dream made possible by MCM Fund support. In sum, the Maybelle Clark Macdonald Fund challenge has dramatically strengthened PlayWrite in every way. It is instrumental in building the foundation of organizational sustainability necessary to transform the lives of youth ”at the edge.”
